In these times of global health crisis, His Holiness the Dalai Lama sent a special message to the world entitled “The Call to Unite”. His words are read by his friend Desmond Tutu. This is very symbolic because Tutu is a South African Anglican cleric and theologian and he represents a different religion and culture.
The Dalai Lama’s appeal is clear. He addresses us as one human family and calls us to care and be compassionate to each other. This is the Dalai Lama’s conviction which is found in many of his past teachingsand activities. He believes that we all share and experience the same hopes and fears, so it is important we co-operate together in giving a united response to them.
There are currently many great examples of human kindness around the world. People care more about their elders, they support medical staff, make donations to charities. Many of us are aware that we are interconnected. We also witness amazing acts of solidarity in interfaith partnerships. For instance, the Lutheran Berlin church hosted Muslim prayer, because the nearby mosque was too small to adhere to the physical distancing rules.
Even-so, the present conflict situation in the United States shows that the way to becoming one human family will still be long and painful.
